The Difference Between a Network Access Point and a Wi-Fi Extender
Several products can make Wi-Fi reach farther, but they do not all work the same way.
An access point connects to the network
A wired access point normally uses Ethernet to connect to the network and provides wireless service to nearby devices.
An extender repeats wireless traffic
A wireless extender receives and retransmits traffic. This can be useful when wiring is impractical, but it adds another wireless dependency.
Mesh systems can use different backhaul methods
Some mesh systems use wireless backhaul; others can use Ethernet. The design matters more than the word “mesh.”
Choose based on the building and the requirement
If Ethernet can be installed, a wired access point can often provide a more predictable solution. If wiring is impractical, a wireless approach may still be appropriate.
The right answer depends on the physical environment, expected traffic and how much reliability is required.
