Reliable Home Networks and Systems

Your home network is the foundation for almost everything connected to the Internet: computers, phones, televisions, streaming devices, cameras, smart-home equipment and the services you use every day. When the network is unreliable, it can make otherwise good technology seem broken.

ScottB.ca helps homeowners in London, Ontario troubleshoot, improve and plan home networks so they are reliable, understandable and appropriate for the way the household actually uses technology.

Wi-Fi Is Only Part of the Network

Good Wi-Fi depends on more than the router. Building materials, distance, interference, device location, network layout, Internet service and the number of connected devices can all affect performance.

Sometimes the right answer is better wireless coverage. Sometimes Ethernet is more appropriate. Sometimes the problem is not wireless at all and replacing the router would accomplish very little.

Problems I Can Help Diagnose

  • Slow or unreliable Wi-Fi.
  • Devices that repeatedly disconnect.
  • Weak coverage in parts of the home.
  • Streaming or video-call interruptions.
  • Smart-home devices that cannot connect reliably.
  • Problems after changing an Internet provider or router.
  • Home networks that have grown complicated over time.

A Network Should Be Secure and Supportable

A reliable network should also have sensible security and a configuration that can be understood when something needs to change. That can include appropriate wireless security, strong account practices, sensible device separation and keeping important equipment and configurations documented.

The goal is not maximum complexity. It is a network that provides the protection and reliability the household actually needs.

Improve What You Already Have First

Before buying new equipment, I look at the existing Internet service, router, access points, cabling and device requirements. A configuration change or better placement can sometimes solve a problem that would otherwise lead to an unnecessary purchase.

When new equipment is justified, I can help determine what would actually improve the situation and how it should fit into the existing system.

Talk About Your Home Network

Before you choose a solution

Before replacing or adding home technology, it is worth understanding what is already working, what is causing the problem, and what you actually need.

Do I need to replace it? Not necessarily. Sometimes configuration, connectivity, compatibility or maintenance is the real issue.
Can my existing technology be used? Often it can. The first step is understanding what you have and how the pieces currently work together.
What is the simplest reliable option? The best solution is usually the one that solves the actual problem without adding unnecessary complexity.

Technology that works at home can matter at work too.

Many home technology needs overlap with the challenges small businesses face: reliable connectivity, secure data, devices that work together and people who know how to use them. If you have a business—or know a business with a similar need—Scott can help there too.
