DNS Explained: Why It Can Look Like the Internet Is Broken

DNS is one of those technologies that most people never think about until it stops working. When DNS fails, a computer may still have a working network connection but websites and services can suddenly appear unavailable.

What DNS actually does

DNS translates names such as google.com into the addresses computers use to reach services. It is essentially a directory service for the Internet and for many private networks.

When you type a website name, your device normally asks a DNS service for the address. If that lookup fails, the device may not know where to connect even though the network itself is functioning.

Why DNS problems are confusing

A DNS failure can look like an Internet outage. Email may stop working, websites may not open, and applications may report that they cannot connect. At the same time, an IP-based test or an existing connection may still work.

That distinction is useful when troubleshooting. The question is not simply “Is the Internet working?” but “Which part of the connection path is failing?”

DNS belongs in the troubleshooting process

When several unrelated services fail at the same time, DNS is worth considering. The router, local network, provider, DNS service and individual device can all be part of the path.

Good troubleshooting separates those layers instead of immediately replacing equipment.

The practical takeaway

If a device appears connected but names will not resolve, do not assume the Internet connection itself is broken. DNS may be the missing piece.
