Network Segmentation Without Unnecessary Complexity

Network segmentation can be useful for security and organization, but it should have a purpose.

Start with the reason

Common reasons include separating guests from internal systems, isolating voice devices, protecting specialized equipment or reducing the impact of a compromised device.

Map the communication that is actually required

Before creating separate networks, identify which devices need to communicate. This makes firewall and routing rules much easier to design.

Keep the number of networks reasonable

Every additional segment introduces configuration and troubleshooting requirements. A small business does not benefit from ten networks simply because the equipment can support them.

Document the boundaries

Record what each segment is for, which devices belong there and what communication is allowed between segments.

Simplicity is a security feature too

A design that nobody understands is difficult to maintain securely. Effective segmentation is deliberate, documented and supportable.
