What Does ITIL Actually Mean for a Small Business?
IT service management concepts can sound like they belong only in large organizations. Some of the underlying ideas are useful at any size.
Think in terms of services
Instead of looking only at individual devices, consider the service the business depends on: email, phones, Internet access, accounting, file access or customer systems.
Record important changes
Knowing what changed before a problem began can make troubleshooting much faster.
Learn from recurring incidents
If the same problem happens repeatedly, it may be worth addressing the underlying cause instead of treating each event as unrelated.
Keep the process proportional
A five-person company does not need a committee for every password reset. The useful part of service management is applying enough structure to improve reliability without creating unnecessary administration.
The goal is better service
Technology management should make the business more capable and predictable. Process is useful when it supports that outcome.
