When Your Internet Provider Says the Problem Is Your Network

How to determine whether an Internet problem is inside the home or business

How to determine whether an Internet problem is inside the home or business

The provider may be right—or the problem may be somewhere else

Internet service crosses several boundaries: the provider connection, modem or gateway, router, local network, Wi-Fi and the device you are using. A problem anywhere along that path can look like an Internet problem.

Separate the layers

Start by identifying whether the provider connection is stable. Then consider the gateway, router, wired network, wireless network and individual device. Testing at different points can narrow down where the failure occurs.

Why this matters

If the provider needs to investigate, giving them useful evidence can make the support process faster. If the provider connection is working, the same evidence can prevent an unnecessary service call.

Do not change everything at once

Changing the modem, router, Wi-Fi settings and device configuration simultaneously makes it harder to know what actually fixed the problem. Isolate the variables where possible.
