Why Internet Speed Is Not the Same as Network Performance

A fast Internet package is useful, but it does not guarantee that every device on a network will perform well.

There are several paths involved

A device may communicate with another local device without using the Internet at all. When it does access an online service, traffic passes through the local network, router or firewall, Internet connection and remote service.

A problem in any part of that path can affect the experience.

Wi-Fi can be the bottleneck

A high-speed Internet connection cannot make a weak or congested wireless connection faster. The device still has to communicate with the access point.

Local congestion matters

Switches, wireless networks, older equipment and poor cabling can all limit performance before traffic ever reaches the Internet provider.

The remote service matters too

A slow website or cloud application is not automatically evidence that your Internet connection is slow.

Measure the right thing

When troubleshooting performance, identify where the slowdown occurs. Compare wired and wireless performance, local and Internet services, and multiple devices.

A good network diagnosis looks at the complete path rather than the speed advertised on the Internet bill.
