Why VoIP Problems Are Often Network Problems

Understanding the relationship between business phone systems and network connectivity

Voice depends on the network

Internet-based voice systems rely on connectivity between the phone, local network, Internet connection and communications provider. A problem in any of those areas can affect call quality.

Symptoms can be misleading

Choppy audio, dropped calls, delay or one-way audio can have different causes. Wireless interference, congestion, routing, firewall settings, provider issues and endpoint configuration can all be relevant.

Troubleshoot the complete path

Start with the affected users and locations. Compare wired and wireless devices where possible, look for patterns and determine whether the problem follows a user, device, network segment or service.

Good communications support crosses boundaries

A phone provider may support the phone platform, while another provider manages the Internet and someone else manages the local network. Understanding how those pieces interact helps identify where the real problem lies.
